2018 Hard to Start

Been a member longtime, just never post. I’ve got an issue that I need some advice on. My 2018 is hard to crank— as the starter engages it sounds almost as if the battery is dead. Next turn of the key and it usually fires right up. Now it is two or three times turning the key before she starts. Battery is fairly new, with a battery tender attached. Reads 13.5 vdc. Any ideas? Thanks.

To piggyback what Roxasuras said,

If you take it to your local car parts store they can hook it up on a reader for free and check your starter, worked for me a few months back

Wish I could. My Roxor and I live on a small island off the coast of Puerto Rico…no bridge, so shipping costs are outrageous to the main island. I can get parts shipped in, but Pep Boys and Autozone are out of reach

I personally don't. I wonder how much those readers go for? If cheap enough maybe it could be beneficial for you to buy it?

If it is a manual roll start, just to eliminate a bad ground or something else, if it is random, more than likely starter.

I live on a hill, so easy to roll start it. I’ll try in the morning. Don’t think that the ground is an issue as it will crank after the first or second turn of the key. Starter sounds like the likely problem. Thanks for the replies!

Sounds to me like your starter is going out. They do not like getting wet, it is possible to take it apart and clean up the contacts. Odds are that the brushes are about gone though, especially if you’re reading 13.5 volts and it does not want to turn over.

Did the pop start this morning, cranked right up. Did take three maybe four turns of the key before she finally started when I got her out of the garage to begin with. Looks like I’m pulling the starter tomorrow. In the event that it is going bad, anyone have a source for a new one? Thanks for the helpful advice. Always been the bendix on bad starters for me before, so I needed some advice. Again, thanks.

I'd find one on Amazon, maybe someone on here has cross referenced one. FYI, not to insult anyone's intelligence, remember to disconnect the battery first!

Here is one on Ebay that is supposedly sealed. From what I've read, moisture getting into the factory starter is a killer, so a sealed one may well be the route to go.

can you enlighten me about this sealed vs non sealed starter? Is one water resistant where the other is not?

One of the guys up in the Matsu Valley in Alaska (I forget his screen name) posted about how he has gone thru a few starters due to moisture. If you search starter it will probably come up.

Interesting, would it handle better if it got submerge in off roading applications?

I keep hearing the starters aren't good once it makes contact with water from off roading

I don't know. Fortunately, water crossings in the high desert aren't common and when I do cross a creek, we're talking maybe a foot or so of water. Still, if I do end up needing a new starter, I'm going to hunt down one of the "sealed" ones to at least maybe minimize the chance of a water-killed starter.

Probably just the solenoid and you will not need the complete starter.

Update: I just checked the parts manual for the Roxor and saw that they do not have a separate part number for the solenoid. If I do find one I will post it.

Sounds like my third starter is going out, one a year since I got my 2018 My dealer in Soldotna Ak.doesn’t sell Roxors anymore.
